Class of 2001
Degree: Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy
Minor: Music Theory & Composition
Not only did I get out in four years, but I had a great time along the way.
After switching majors from Business to Philosophy during my sophomore year, I became more open-minded through studying topics such as informal logic, ethics, mythology, metaphysics and more. This stuff was hard to grasp at times, but very exciting! A Music Theory and Composition minor completed my academic focus at Miami University.
The best lessons I learned though, during these four years, came from being co-founder of the city's hottest rock band: Halias. Through dedication, teamwork, and risk-taking, Halias became "the band to see" in Oxford. Who knew six hippie kids and one lighting gal could have so much fun?
Halias threw Oxford's largest festival (dubbed Hallow's Eve) on the weekend of Friday the 13th. Six bands were invited from around the Midwest to open the show, over 800 tickets were sold, yours truly managed a staff of 50 people, and the experience left one of the greatest memories in many people's minds for years to come. We were regular headliners at Midwest clubs, we lived and learned on the road. Many efforts went into making Halias successful, and many of them applicable to the business world: Marketing, Brand Continuity, Sales, Communication, Planning, Persistence, Dedication, Writing, etc. The problem was that there was much more popularity to be gained than actual money. So as most bands do, we disbanded. We are all very good friends to this day.
