Publishing Everything.com Categories/Taxonomies

Posted on | July 6, 2009 | No Comments

By July 1st, 2009, I have led the publication of 14 categories, with 8 more to be published in the coming weeks. Since going live in mid-April, our most popular category is New Age and our top search (at this early stage) is to be expected from internet users searching wide open of a site. Most of the traffic is coming from PPC campaigns, however a link-building strategy is right around the corner. For now, here's a taste of what we've accomplished thus far:

Site visitors can sign up for the newsletter and register a free account allowing them to create a profile, write articles, submit requested topics, and comment on articles. The Facebook Fan Page & Twitter Account are also regularly updated on a regular basis.

Everything.com | Beta Release

Posted on | May 6, 2009 | No Comments

Since November of 2008, I've been working on the Alpha version of Everything.com, an aggressive startup "how to" website offering free informational content about nearly all topics to the general public. In April, the site went live and we entered Beta. Key competitors: About.com, eHow.com, HowStuffWorks.com, etc.

As the Online Content Manager for Everything.com, I have played an integral role in these key areas of the site's development:

  • Developing the business rules for a complex, interconnecting tree-structure taxonomy
  • Helping incorporate an eCommerce taxonomy into the site architecture
  • Creating user levels & permissions
  • Developing the Everything.com Style Guide
  • Developing 10 initial deep taxonomies (each three levels deep), and 10 more during the summer of '09
  • Working with publishing communities to develop a process allowing them to publish their print content online
  • Conducting large keyword lists for new article topics & category name refinements
  • Developing social media strategies utilizing a primary account with both Facebook and Twitter, as well as incorporating use of DIGG & StumbleUpon into the duties of the future writing program
  • Publishing over 4,000 articles during the first six months of 2009
  • Testing & Guiding the re-formatting of article pages on Everything.com, using Excel spreadsheets & Access databases to dissect content from PDF files of book (This allowed us to import & publish articles at a much faster rate than intial content development process (using freelance editors) allowed)

Google Page Rank | Explained

Posted on | August 1, 2008 | 3 Comments

This is a must read, although not easy to understand.

What is PageRank?

PageRank is a numeric value that represents how important a page is on the web. Google figures that when one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for the other page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be. Also, the importance of the page that is casting the vote determines how important the vote itself is. Google calculates a page's importance from the votes cast for it. How important each vote is is taken into account when a page's PageRank is calculated.  PageRank is Google's way of deciding a page's importance. It matters because it is one of the factors that determines a page's ranking in the search results. It isn't the only factor that Google uses to rank pages, but it is an important one.

Unique Content is King

Posted on | July 31, 2008 | No Comments

In case you have forgotten, or never realized, content is king when it comes to the web. Give me a static HTML page with optimized content that provides the targeted reader exactly what they are looking for, and then some, over a fancy shmancy designed website (with less content) any day.

People are looking for information. Why not give it to them? And, why not provide it to the search engines in a way that will make them rank your page higher? Content Development with an SEO focus needs to be the first focus of a website, after developing the general vision.
